Mulled old fashioned
This festive twist on a classic cocktail features a homemade syrup infused with cinnamon, orange and cloves for a warming, subtly spiced result

Ingredients
- 350ml red wine (we used chianti)
- 300g granulated sugar
- 2cinnamon sticks
- 1orange, halved
- 1tsp cloves
- ½tsp whole black peppercorns
- 2star anise
- a few gratings nutmeg
- 45ml bourbon whiskey
- 15ml mulled syrup
- 2-3 drops chocolate bitters
- strip of lemon peel
Instructions
Step 1
Put all the syrup ingredients in a large pan over a medium heat. Warm the wine until hot but not boiling, stirring until the sugar has melted. Remove from the heat and cover, leaving to infuse for 20 mins, then strain and leave to cool.Step 2
Pour all the old fashioned ingredients over ice, stir and serve in a tumbler with a twist of lemon.
