This rich, chocolate sauce is a staple in the American South, and is served over biscuits or with fruit, both for breakfast and for dessert.
- Serves: 6 persons
- ⅓cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1cup granulated sugar
- 1teaspoon salt
- 1 ½cups whole milk
- 3tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1teaspoon vanilla extract
- To serve: 6 buttermilk biscuits
Step 1Gather the ingredients.
Step 2In a medium saucepan sift the cocoa powder, flour, sugar, and salt and whisk to combine.
Step 3Slowly add milk and whisk until all the lumps are gone.
Step 4Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring constantly, until the gravy just begins to boil and then thickens.
Step 5Once thick, remove from the heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Continue stirring until the butter has melted.
Step 6Serve immediately, spooned over biscuits.
