Baklava - How to Make Baklawa
Baklava, or baklawa, is a delicious pastry that is known worldwide with variations depending on where in the Middle East you are.

Ingredients
- 2 ½cups walnuts or pistachio nuts
- 4cups sugar plus 1/2 cup
- 1pound butter
- 1package, or 16 oz. frozen filo dough (thawed according to package directions)
- 2cups water
- ½teaspoon lemon juice
- 2teaspoons rosewater
- Cinnamon (to taste if using walnuts)
Instructions
Step 1
Gather the ingredients.Step 2
Combine 4 cups sugar, lemon juice, and water in a medium saucepan.Step 3
Bring to a boil, and allow to boil for 10 minutes.Step 4
Add rosewater and bring to a boil. Remove from heat immediately.Step 5
Allow to cool. Prepare the Dough and Filling:Step 6
Combine 1/2 cup sugar and nuts in a bowl. If using walnuts, add cinnamon .Step 7
Preheat oven to 300 F.Step 8
Unroll dough and cut into 9 x 12 pieces to fit into a dish.Step 9
Grease bottom of 9 x 12 pan with butter.Step 10
Place 2 sheets of dough in the baking dish .Step 11
Brush dough with butter and repeat until half of the filo dough is used.Step 12
Spread about 1 cup of the nut mixture over the last layer of dough.Step 13
Place two sheets of filo dough and brush with butter.Step 14
Repeat until nut mixture is used.Step 15
On the final layer of filo dough, be sure to brush with butter.Step 16
Cut into 3-inch squares.Step 17
Then, cut each square in half diagonally to make triangles.Step 18
Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until golden brown.Step 19
Remove from oven and pour syrup over the top of baklava and allow to seep and saturate it well.Step 20
