Green Tomato Soup With Country Ham Recipe
This flavorful green tomato soup recipe is made with diced country ham, a little garlic, and some jalapeño pepper and hot sauce.
- Serves: 6 persons
- 2tablespoons butter
- 4to 6 ounces country ham or smoked ham, diced
- 1small onion, diced
- 2cloves garlic, minced
- 4cups chicken broth
- 8medium green tomatoes, peeled and chopped
- 2medium red tomatoes, peeled and chopped
- 1jalapeno pepper, seeds and stem removed, minced
- ¼teaspoon celery salt
- Optional: dash of Tabasco sauce
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Step 1Gather the ingredients.
Step 2Heat the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the ham, onion, and garlic. Sauté, stirring until the onion is tender.
Step 3Add the chicken broth, chopped green and red tomatoes, and the jalapeño pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes.
Step 4Working in batches, pulse the soup in a blender or food processor until almost smooth, or use an immersion blender. If you want to garnish the soup with chunks of ham, remove some pieces of the ham before blending.
Step 5Pour the pureed soup back into the saucepan and add the celery salt. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes.
Step 6Adjust the flavors with salt, pepper, and Tabasco sauce, as desired, and serve.
