Basic Cinnamon Apple Crisp With Oat Topping
This is a basic apple crisp recipe made with fresh sliced apples, brown sugar, spices, and butter and a topping made with butter, flour, and oats.

- 4to 6 medium tart apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 4 to 5 cups)
- 2tablespoons lemon juice
- ½cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
- 2tablespoons all-purpose flour
- ½to 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼teaspoon nutmeg
- For the Topping:
- ⅓cup granulated sugar
- ½cup all-purpose flour
- ½cup quick-cooking oats
- 6tablespoons (3 ounces) unsalted butter, melted
- For Serving:
- Ice cream or whipped cream, optional
Step 1Gather the ingredients.
Step 2Heat the oven to 375 F.
Step 3Butter an 8-inch square baking dish.
Step 4In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with the lemon juice, the brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg; arrange in the prepared baking dish.
Step 5To make the topping, in a medium bowl, combine the granulated sugar, 1/2 cup flour, and the oats; stir in the melted butter.
Step 6Scatter the topping mixture over the apples.
Step 7Bake in the heated oven for 30 minutes, or until apples are tender and the top is nicely browned. Serve warm or cooled with ice cream or whipped cream.
Step 8Store leftovers in the refrigerator. To reheat, place slices in a baking dish and heat in a heated 350 F oven until warmed through.
