Ingredients
- 2cups warm water
- 1tablespoon active dry yeast
- 2teaspoons sugar
- 5to 6 cups flour
- 2teaspoons sea salt
- 2teaspoon olive oil
- 3uncooked fresh lasagna noodles (from an Italian deli)
- 12to 16 ounces buffalo mozzarella cheese (found at a specialty grocer)
- 1jar gourmet marinara sauce
- 1container of ricotta cheese
- ½cup fresh basil , chopped
- ¼cup fresh oregano , chopped
- 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
- ½stick butter
Instructions
Step 1
In a small bowl, combine the water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it starts to foam.Step 2
Sift together 2 cups of flour and the salt; add them to a mixer's bowl. Using a dough hook, stir in the yeast mixture and continue adding 1/2 cup of flour at a time until the dough is smooth but not sticky. (Alternatively, you can knead by hand.)Step 3
Divide the dough into 2 balls. Place one in an oiled bowl in a warm spot in your kitchen and allow it to rise until doubled. Freeze the other ball for later use.Step 4
Preheat the oven to 400 F.Step 5
Bring a large pot of water to boil on the stove. Add the fresh lasagna noodles and simmer for 3 minutes.Step 6
Remove the pot from the stove and strain the noodles into a colander. Toss them gently with 1 tablespoon oil and allow them to cool.Step 7
Roll out the risen dough ball on a floured surface into a rectangular form. Place it onto an olive oiled baking sheet or a sheet prepped with a silicone baking mat.Step 8
Arrange the lasagna noodles, sauce, ricotta cheese, mozzarella slices, and basil in layers lengthwise down the center of the dough. Repeat the layering one time, and then end with an additional layer of just mozzarella and basil.Step 9
Fold the bread dough over the filling, tucking it in and pinching it closed on both ends, and place it seam-side down on the baking pan.Step 10
With an oiled, sharp knife, place several shallow slashes diagonally down the top of the loaf. Move swiftly and let the knife do the work. This will allow the bread to expand while it bakes, assuring the contents stays inside.Step 11
Melt the butter in a glass dish in the microwave. Combine it with the minced garlic and oregano.Step 12
Brush the garlic butter mixture on top of dough.Step 13
Bake in the oven for 17 to 20 minutes, until golden brown. Cool slightly and serve.
