All-Day Apple Butter
This apple butter cooks real slow but is well worth the wait. Depending on the sweetness of the apples used, the amount of sugar may be adjusted to taste.
- Serves: 4 persons
- 5½ pounds apples - peeled, cored and finely chopped
- 4cups white sugar
- 2teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ¼teaspoon ground cloves
- ¼teaspoon salt
Step 1Place apples in a slow cooker. Mix sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a medium bowl; pour over apples and mix well.
Step 2Cover and cook on High for 1 hour.
Step 3Reduce heat to Low and cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture is thickened and dark brown, 9 to 11 hours.
Step 4Uncover and continue cooking on Low for 1 hour. Stir with a whisk to increase smoothness if desired.
Step 5Spoon mixture into sterile containers, cover, and refrigerate or freeze.
