Czech Fried Cheese (Syr Smazeny)
This Czech recipe for fried cheese or syr smazeny is a popular street food made with Edam, Swiss, or Gouda cheese and can be a vegetarian main course.
- Serves: 2 persons
- ½pound cheese (4 (1-inch-thick) slices, Edam, Gouda or Swiss)
- Salt , to taste, optional
- ½cup all-purpose flour
- 1large egg, beaten
- ⅔cup breadcrumbs
- Oil, or shortening, for frying
Step 1Gather the ingredients.
Step 2Sprinkle cheese with optional salt, if desired.
Step 3Dredge slices in flour, then in beaten egg, and finally in breadcrumbs, making sure cheese slices are completely covered.
Step 4Pan fry quickly in hot oil or shortening until golden brown. Serve immediately.
